Project Outcomes
This project aims to develop basic research physicians and related professionals with "Clinical Forensic Medicine" expertise that can be applied to clinical fields such as child abuse, drug addiction, and unknown infectious diseases through collaboration between medical, dental, engineering, law, and local communities. Specifically, in coordination with the "Advanced Research Infrastructure Sharing Promotion Project" adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 2020, forensic experts from the Ishikawa Prefectural Police Scientific Investigation Research Institute and other related facilities are compiling information concerning child abuse and drug intoxication into an educational database. University faculty members and external collaboration partners will utilize this database to provide specialized forensic medical education, including practical simulated forensic examinations. Furthermore, the curriculum integrates foundational courses in forensic medicine—such as clinical statistics, relevant legal regulations, forensic odontology, and forensic autopsy training—and advanced forensic research courses in collaboration with the Graduate Excellence Program, engineering, and analytical sciences. Through this, the program aims to develop professionals capable of practicing pioneering “Clinical Forensic Medicine.” The program's outcomes are expected to have ripple effects not only in Ishikawa Prefecture and the Hokuriku region but also in other prefectures, including the Tohoku region.
Four universities—Kanazawa University (representative school), Akita University and Kanazawa Medical University (partner schools), and The Nippon Dental University (cooperating school)—have formed a consortium to collaborate on this project. By consolidating case data from each university into a "Living Body and Autopsy Examination Database" organized by precedent, a new educational database can be created that could not be developed by a single university.
The program's core curriculum includes simulated forensic examinations using this database, forensic report writing exercises, and internships at scientific investigation institutes and child consultation centers. Students also gain hands-on experience in forensic pathology, normal and forensic autopsy procedures, and forensic case investigations. Additionally, they receive training to obtain qualifications in forensic autopsy and medico-legal examinations. These qualifications are beneficial not only for forensic pathologists and anatomists but also for clinical physicians, strengthening career prospects after program completion. Graduates will be eligible to apply for forensic autopsy qualifications and will also be granted continued access to the forensic database. Additionally, they may obtain a certification as a “Medical and Dental Clinical Forensic Expert,” accredited by the consortium. At least four academic or clinical positions will be secured for outstanding students, including two university faculty positions in forensic medicine and two clinical positions at child consultation centers. This initiative aims to produce foundational research specialists in forensic medicine and odontology.
Intensive Course graduates are expected to contribute to preventing oversight of child abuse, addressing drug addiction, and responding to unknown infectious diseases in general hospitals, clinics, dental clinics, police departments, and child consultation centers. Specifically, physicians are expected to serve as police-consulting forensic doctors, nurses as forensic nursing specialists, legal scholars in the legal profession, and law enforcement or child welfare graduates may assume senior positions as judicial police officers or child welfare supervisors. Graduates will be certified as "Clinical Forensic Medicine Specialists," providing opportunities for career advancement and second careers.
